Deb and Kim's Video Lesson
Media Literacy Project
We can use these pictures in our video. I am not sure if we want to use to exact captions as they are copied from an AP article, but we should put at least their name and accusations. There are so many, but these are more "high profile" I guess you could say...
"Debra Lafave was sentenced to house arrest and probation in 2005 after pleading guilty to charges that she had sex with a 14-year-old student" AP
"Mary Kay Letourneau, left, served a seven-year sentence for having sex with student Vili Fualaau, right, when he was 12. They had two children and wed in 2005" AP
"In 2005, Pamela Rogers received an eight-year sentence for having sex with a 13-year-old student. She later sent suggestive photos to the boy and got two years added." AP
"After her relationship with a 16-year-old student resulted in a pregnancy in 2004, Rebecca Boicelli went on maternity leave during the police investigation and found a job at another school nearby"AP
"Wendie Schweikert, 37, pleaded guilty to having sex with an 11-year-old student and in March was sentenced to 10 years in prison" AP
*Update from Deb
*Recently arrested in Mexico, Kelsey Peterson is a 25 year old math teacher from Nebraska eloped with a 13 year old male student when their relationship was threatened with exposure.
This is the most recent example very much like Mary Kay.
"In this photo provided by the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, Kelsey Peterson, 25, is pictured in El Centro, Calif., on Nov. 5, 2007. The Nebraska teacher is in federal custody and expected to face federal charges of crossing state lines to have sex with a minor _ a former student who is 13 _ an offense punishable by 10 years to life in prison and a $250,000 fine." We can put these on the black transition screens at towards the end:
"A Kaiser Family Foundation study, 29% of teens reported feeling pressure to have sex, 33% of sexually active teens reported "being in a relationship where they felt things were moving too fast sexually", and 24% had "done something sexual they didn’t really want to do"
"In the 1997 PARADE survey, 57% replied that sexualized content in film, 55% in television, and 44% in music helped to influence teenagers to engage in sexual activity before they are ready. A 1996 U.S. News & World Report poll, which asked about how television programs might contribute to the incidence of teenage pregnancy, found that 46% thought TV played a large role, 30% that it had some effect, 14% that it had little effect, 9% that it had none."
"In previous empirical work on adolescents' room culture (Brown, Dykers, Steele, & White, 1994), we had found that many teens draw heavily from media images and storylines as they wrestle with who they are and where they fit in the world"
(this website has a lot of statistics but I'm not sure how credible the site is)
Additional Clips for our video: (I put their dates for the timeline of the video...some still need links)
Leave it to Beaver Clip
The Graduate (1967)
Animal House Clip (1978)
Julie and Luke- The O.C.
Gabrielle and John the Gardner
- Desperate Housewives (2004)
Debra Lafave clip in courtroom
Kristin- you may want to cut some of these clips down just to show the important parts because I think some are fairly long. I looked for the Animal House clip but could not find it...maybe someone else will have luck!
Tyler- here is what I emailed you. I just put it on here just in case you do not get the email.
The sexual connotations in the todays commercials directed towards teenagers has caused an increase in teenage promiscuity. While our initial theme was sexual connotations directed towards teenagers, we saw a trend in commercials portraying sexual relationships of adult women (teachers, moms) with teenage boys. This subject was highly scrutinized in the past, but is becoming acceptable in present day pop culture and advertising. Our video shows a clip of The Graduate, which was released in 1967, where a young college graduate is seduced by an older lady, Mrs. Robinson. Even though Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) is not actually a teenager in the film, it was still extremely controversial when it was first released, whereas today numerous references to such relations often go unnoticed and are even commended as shown with our commercial and television examples. This causes a major double-standard in our society were teenagers, especially males, are told it is ok and acceptable to be in a sexual relationship with an older woman (be it a teacher or someone's mom) through advertising, television, and movies but other media outlets and society as a whole greatly condemns it. While adolescence is a crucial time for teenagers to find their identity, they tend to be more susceptible to and influenced by the messages sent by advertising and television.
Deb sent this in an email on here so I am just reposting it on the page:
Some details on the project
I found an article on the marketing of skin care projects to men which I think relates to the highly sexualized message of these ads. The key points:
Male skin care emerges as market leader. However, due to disappointing overall sales growth in the past year, manufacturers are urged to go after male consumers with marketing strategies relevant to their lifestyle.
A recent Datamonitor survey has shown that 73 per cent of European and US men said that spending time in front of the mirror was 'important' or 'very important', compared to 72 per cent of women with the same response. Thus mirroring the arrival of the metrosexual era, with skincare emerging as the key trend.
Based on the size of the men's prestige fragrance industry, we believe men's skin care also has the potential to be a billion dollar industry, but it is hovering around the $70 million mark' Grant said. 'I see this as an opportunity to go after men and broaden the user base'.
Suggesting that the prestige skin market should follow the successful marketing process of the male prestige fragrance industry, Grant states that it is not about looking better and feeling younger, 'it's about being relevant to their lifestyle and the old adage of impressing the ladies'.
